take a seat at the table.
Kia Harlan created the immersive art installation A Place Called Beloved that beckons people to experience community together around the table, nourishing our physical and spiritual hunger.
Modeled after The Last Supper, we ponder the ideas of the body of Christ broken for us, and the blood poured out over us. This installation creates a safe space that invokes a sense of belonging and home.
A key component of this installation is found objects. As someone who abruptly left their home in China with only a single suitcase of belongings, reclaiming other people’s artifacts as Kia’s own to cherish and honor has become a means to reconcile her past and find a sense of belonging. Their untold stories become part of her story, and she has the chance to redeem their form. Beauty can be found in the generosity of bringing people together towards fellowship.
It is her hope that A Place Called Beloved can create a third space for people to find themselves through connection with others. Please come as you are. Welcome sweet human, please have a seat at the table.
